Ours is indeed an age of extremity. For we live under continual threat of two equally fearful, but seemingly opposed, destinies: unremitting banality and inconceivable terror.

Susan Sontag, The Imagination of Disaster

A Life on the Ocean Wave uses survival manuals, distress signals and stories to explore the psychological allure of being lost. In this body of work, I mediate and objectify safety instructions and signs of duress such as flares, smoke signals, rescue dye, dislodging the hope placed in them to embrace uncertainty. Accounts of misadventure and individual heroism give us a vicarious experience of isolation where I explore profound loss and loneliness. In this work, I aim to excavate the philosophical significance of what it means to wander and prepare against the unknown. My research happens deep in secluded wilderness areas where loneliness and isolation are desirable qualities. I meditate by wandering and searching for the unfamiliar. I champion being lost. It is a goal for which I strive. In my meditation I may not find answers to problems, but I can more easily come to terms with the vast uncertainty in which I find myself afloat. The question of what it means to be a lost soul frames my practice as I search for the unexpected. Driven by a passion for the outdoors and our cultural fascination with survivalism, my drawings and videos investigate what it means to make one’s way through life.

My installation at Disjecta consists of fifteen graphite drawings on paper and four projected videos. Five white stands with various dimensions exhibit the graphite drawings in a vitrine style display. Each vitrine groups drawings according to form and content (e.g. clouds, journal entries, constellations / water rescue maneuvers). The height and tilted angle of the stands are taken directly from my drafting table, offering the viewer an encounter similar my relationship with the drawings during the making process. I see this posture as referencing a position consistent with reading a book as well as bowing one’s head in religious reverence. On the floor in the center of the installation sits a plinth with a two-channel video loop projected onto its top. Alternating on the wall are two single-channel videos. Dougal Robertson’s Sea Survival: A Manual is the source for the work’s content.
